GA4 Setup & Configuration

Event-driven measurement configured around your business, not defaults.

GA4 is an event-based platform that measures almost nothing useful until someone defines what matters. We map your business questions to specific events and parameters, then configure the property, key events, audiences and retention settings inside your own Google account.

Tools we work in

  • Google Analytics 4
  • Google Tag Manager
  • Google Signals
  • Google Ads
  • Looker Studio
  • BigQuery

Scope

What this covers

The specific work included when you engage us for this service.

  • Measurement plan mapping each business question to a named event and its parameters
  • Property, data stream and organisation structure set up in your own Google account
  • Key events and conversions defined deliberately rather than left to auto-collection
  • Custom dimensions, custom metrics and calculated metrics for what GA4 omits by default
  • Audiences built for reporting, remarketing and export to Google Ads
  • Data retention, user-ID and cross-domain settings reviewed and set to a stated value
  • Internal traffic, developer traffic and known bot or spam referral filtering

What you receive

  • 01A documented measurement plan listing every event, its trigger and its parameters
  • 02A configured GA4 property with key events, audiences and filters in place
  • 03A naming convention so events added later stay consistent with the ones shipped now

Questions

GA4 Setup & Configuration, answered

We already have GA4 collecting data. Is that not enough?

Collecting is not the same as measuring. Most existing installs capture page views plus whatever the platform collects automatically, while missing the actions that matter to you, quote requests, phone taps, qualified form submissions, checkout steps. We audit what is there before changing anything, because a property that has been running is worth preserving rather than replacing.

Can you restore our old Universal Analytics history?

No, and nobody can. Universal Analytics stopped processing new hits in 2023 and its data cannot be imported into GA4. If you still hold archived exports we will keep them for reference, but GA4 starts a new baseline and any year-on-year comparison has to be written up as approximate.

How do consent settings affect what we see?

Every event is registered with the consent state required for it to fire, so a visitor who declines sees a reduced set of events and shorter-lived storage. That is the correct behaviour, and it means your totals will not equal your raw traffic. We document which events are affected so the gap is expected rather than alarming.

Tell us where the manual work is

A 30-minute call. We map the process, tell you what we would automate or build first, and what it costs. No retainer before you agree the scope.

  • No retainer before scope is agreed
  • Written plan you can act on alone
  • Worldwide delivery, on your hours
