What each parameter does in GA4
| Parameter | Means | Example | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| utm_source | Source | linkedin, google, newsletter | The specific place the click came from. |
| utm_medium | Medium | cpc, email, social, referral | The type of traffic, not the name of the platform. |
| utm_campaign | Campaign | cloud-launch-q4 | The initiative. Keep it stable across channels so the campaign can be compared. |
| utm_term | Term | n8n-consultant | Paid keyword. Optional and usually only used for search. |
| utm_content | Content | hero-link, footer-cta | Which link or creative was clicked, for A/B comparison. |
What this works out
- A validated campaign URL with the five standard UTM parameters
- Warnings for uppercase letters, spaces and missing source or medium
- A reference of common source and medium values that report cleanly in GA4
- Existing query parameters preserved rather than overwritten

Questions about this tool
Does case matter in UTM parameters?
Yes, and it is the most common cause of a campaign appearing twice in reports. GA4 treats Google, google and GOOGLE as three different sources. Everything here is lowercased automatically because there is no good reason for a campaign tag to contain a capital letter.
Is utm_source the same as the traffic source in GA4?
Not exactly. GA4 uses the last non-direct click by default and can override your parameters through channel grouping or ads auto-tagging. UTM values populate the session source and medium, and the channel group is then derived from them. If you run Google Ads, gclid auto-tagging takes precedence for that traffic.
Should I tag internal links between my own pages?
No. Internal UTMs start a new session and overwrite the original source, which makes it look as though a visitor arrived from your newsletter when they actually came from organic search. Tag outbound campaigns only.
