API Development & Integration
Interfaces other systems can depend on without breaking.
An API is a contract. We design the shape of the data, version it, document it and make it fail predictably, so the systems on either side can change independently. The work covers building new APIs and integrating the ones you already depend on.
Tools we work in
- Node.js
- NestJS
- FastAPI
- Python
- GraphQL
- OpenAPI
- PostgreSQL
- Redis
Scope
What this covers
The specific work included when you engage us for this service.
- REST and GraphQL API design with consistent error handling
- OpenAPI specifications and generated client libraries
- Authentication and authorisation: OAuth 2.0, API keys, scopes and rate limits
- Webhooks with retries, signature verification and delivery logs
- Third-party integrations, including the ones with poor documentation
- Versioning, deprecation policy and backwards compatibility
- Monitoring of latency, error rates and throughput per endpoint
What you receive
- 01A documented API with an OpenAPI specification and working request examples
- 02Integration code connecting the systems that need to exchange data
- 03Logging and alerting so a failed integration is visible rather than silent
Questions
API Development & Integration, answered
What if the system we need to integrate has no real API?
Then the options narrow to file-based exchange, a database view, browser automation or asking the vendor to expose something. Each has different reliability and support characteristics, and browser automation in particular breaks whenever the other side changes a page. We will tell you which one we would pick, why, and what will break first.
Do we need GraphQL?
Usually not. GraphQL earns its place when many different clients need different slices of the same data and you are tired of endpoint proliferation. For a single client and a stable contract, REST is simpler to build, cache, monitor and debug, and the tooling around it is more mature.
